The President of South Africa addressed the Nation on the 23rd of March 2020, announcing a significant measure to combat the spread of COVID-19 – a National Shutdown.
Commencing at 00:00 on the 25th of March 2020, South Africans will be required to adhere to a series of restrictions for a period of three weeks.
These measures include:
- Limiting contact to a maximum of two people, unless residing in a household of four or more.
- Avoiding handshakes and physical contact.
- Strictly remaining within one’s residence, with exceptions for essential purposes such as medical appointments, grocery shopping, or collecting medication.
- Deployment of the Army to ensure compliance with the set regulations.
Furthermore, the following additional measures have been implemented:
- Sale of alcohol has been limited, prohibited beyond 18:00.
- Closure of bars, restaurants, and other establishments until further notice.
- Temporary closure of schools and universities to safeguard students.
- Data service providers reducing costs to facilitate internet accessibility and connectivity during this critical period.
